Brief Introduction

Judo or Ju~do ( 柔道, ju~do,meaning"gentle way") is a modern Japanese martial art and combat sport created in Japan in 1882 by Professor Jigoro Kano. Its most prominent feature is its competitive element, where the object is to either throw one's opponent to the ground, immobilize or otherwise subdue one's oppenent with a grappling maneuver, or force an opponent to submit by joint locking or by executing a choke. Strike and thrusts by hands and feet as well as weapons defenses are a part of judo only in pre-arranged forms(kata) that have recently been included into judo competition.

The Essence of Judo
Judo is a combat sport and everything technical relates to that key word combat. The essence of combat in the knockout - taking the opponent out of action. In Judo knockout is the ippon, in particular the ippon throw since judo is mainly a throwing art. Anything less than ippon throw is failure. Three or five point scores (koka, yuko) are meaningless in combat terms. A good ippon where the thrower stays on his feet, and throws his opponent crisply and abruptly to the mat with impetus. Thevalue of the a throw is judged solely by the question whether the opponent could have stood up from that throw if it had been done on very hard ground. To throw in this way the attacker must come at his opponent like a punch; with lighting-like speed and impact, with surprise, and from any and all directions. It is the ippon that lift the judokas' soul. Nothing less is satisfactory.
